Anybody can learn English

There are thousands of language all over the world and people of a country use their language to communicate among each other, but if they need to build a communication to another country, what sould they do? This is the reason why people all over the world need an international language, and it is english for now. Indonesia let their children learn english since elementary school to high school, but is it right to think that we can learn english better without school or courses? And all we have to do is to speak? Unfortunately i have another idea.

First, english is not as easy as we think it is. It is only one person who experts in english for every ten person and most of them learn it by join some courses. Every subject has an expert and if we want to be expert in it we also need the expert of the subject because it is impossible to learn it by ourselves.

Next, what we have in school is different to what we learn by ourselves, english that we learn outside the school is by hearing and seeing even if what we hear or see are not really correct, it is right that language is flexible but if we truly want to learn it then we have to know which english is truly correct. There are many things in english such as grammar, tenses and so many more in english learning that we wil not find it but in school. Besides, even someone who live in a country which has english as their native language also need school to learn how to communicate correctly using english.

Last, to speak it is not enough at all, it may be right that to be better in english we need to always speak it but also before speak we also know that what we about to speak out is correct so people those communicate with us know exactly what we mean to express and school and courses is the only place to learn and know the correct grammar, tenses, and every things in english.

Most people admit that english is that they learn outside the school is by hearing music and watching movies and by hearing  the music and watching the movies most things that they have is a lot of vocabulary, so it is right that we can learn english outside the school but it is just to complete english that we learned in school or courses and it  will not make us better in english if we just learn it by ourselves.

How should we prepare a professional English Teachers that are suitable for the context of Maluku?

Before we decide how we should prepare for professional English teachers for maluku, we should consider on the learning ways from Maluku. Most people in Maluku don’t really care for education, and most of the teachers are just teach, not educate their students. Sometimes, as a student, we also have a bad attitude although unconcously and it will make the teachers’ intend to teach is already gone.

The Government has decided 2013 curriculum for our education. In my opinion, it is really a good curriculum because the teacher involves the students to be independent in learning, not just rely on the teachers who will always teach and teach. For example the teacher will gave the students an assignment that they should explain and find out their material by theirselves.

There are several methods that the teachers can use to teach English to their students and in my opinion, these are the best one. Such as: Grammatical, Aural, and Direct Approach. Grammatical approach can only work if the instructor speaks the first language of the students in addition to English, because much of it is based on the teacher’s ability to translate (C. Paris, 2014). But, the important thing from this method is Vocabulary, because as a student they must need a lot of words to interpret their own English grammar example.

Aural Methods is the best for the younger students, this process is focused on the natural way to learn a language, which is by hearing it. Because the first thing that we can do in our live is hearing before we learn to read and write. Teachers might give the students an object that can associate the words that they use when hearing. Then, they will be instructed to speak the word by their own sentences.

While in Direct Approach, the material is presented orally with action and pictures. This method is preferred of exercise of a questions based on the dialogue that spoken first. Grammar is taught inductively while Verbs are used systematically. Culture is considered an important aspect of learning the language (Krashen, 1983).

Whatever we teach the students, we cannot guarantee that the students will catch our taught because it is depending also on their willing and their attitude when they learn.

The United States’ Culture

The United States is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world. It can be proved from there are so many language that spoken in the U.S. The United States of America also  has its own unique social and cultural characteristics such as dialect, music, arts, social habits, cuisine, and folklore. The United States of America is an ethnically and diverse country as a result of large scale migration from many ethnically and different countries in the world.

More than 300 languages are spoken in the United States.  It means that almost every language in the world are spoken in U.S, they only used English for business and to entertain. Languages brought to the U.S by colonists or immigrants from Europe, Asia, or other parts of the world. United States doesn’t have an official language, but the most commonly used language is English and we have known nowadays as American English. Spanish is the second most common language in the country. The United States holds the world's fifth largest Spanish speaking population.

German is also the most spoken in the U.S. Russian is also spoken by immigrant populations. Hawaiian is an official language along with English. English, Spanish, French, German and other Native American languages, all other languages are usually learned from immigrant ancestors that came after the time of independence or learned through some form of education.

For the Arts, America becomes the leader of mass media production. As we can see know the center of a film production are in Hollywood and California. Besides that, Music in the U.S. is diverse many styles. American music styles and influences such as rock and roll, jazz, rock, techno, country, hip-hop, rap  and music based on them can be heard all over the world.

The cuisine of the United States is extremely diverse, Traditional American cuisine uses ingredients such as turkey, white-tailed deer venison, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, squash, and maple syrup. Recent immigrants tend to eat food similar to their country of origin, and American versions of these cultural foods, such as American Chinese cuisine and Tex-Mex (Mexican-American cuisine). Mid-western cuisine, potatoes, noodles, roasts, stews, cakes, and other pastries are the most iconic ingredients in both cuisines. Dishes such as the hamburger, pot roast, baked ham, and hot dogs are examples of American dishes derived from German cuisine.

Different regions of the United States have their own cuisine and styles of cooking. The state of Louisiana for example, is known for its Cajun and Creole cooking. Cajun and Creole cooking are influenced by French, Acadian, and Haitian cooking.  Americans generally prefer coffee to tea, and more than half the adult population drinks at least one cup a day. Highly sweetened soft drinks are popular. But hamburgers, fries, and doughnuts are considered American foods.

A communication language is really important. According to Pandhu Wismono (2013) “It is  important because everything is impossible to be done without communication” (p. 2). We are using a language as a means of a communication. English is also has been officially proclaimed as an international language which means that in the international school level, English language is always used as the medium language. In Indonesia for instance, in RSBI or SBI schools (it was), English is used as the medium for most of the courses except Bahasa Indonesia course. It is also a simple language. most people in all around the world are urged to master English as the second language.

As what is stated by Edward Sapir and Benyamin Lee Whorf (in Whorf, 1956) that language affects human’s perspective towards world; by learning English, children will also learn about its culture and of course it affects their point of view towards the world. Therefore, by learning English, children will improve their point of view towards the worlds and of course their knowledge.

Nowadays, the Governent want the students to be able to understand English rather than acquire it as the second language which they can use in the daily activities. In this country, those who are good in English subject will always be considered as smart students equal as science and math. That’s because English has always been considered as a difficult subject to master. It has been a general fact that if students can master English well, they will be able to study everywhere even they will be able to get scholarships easily.

English is really important for students, especially for the young learners. If you only can speak the language and not learn and studying English, you cannot speak them well and your listeners will not understand what you are talking about, because English is not our mother tounge that we can just speak. We have to know the grammar and how we pronunce the word of English. English is nothing if you just speak without the rule of the sentence that we called Grammar.

Anybody can learn English. There is nobody can speak Engish without learn even people in a country that using english as their mother tounge. They also learn and studying English since they’re still a kid. English may not be the most spoken language in the world, but it is the official language in a large number of countries.
